+ How do I get going?
It’s pretty easy
First, make sure you have a space where you can safely put several containers, up to six is a good amount to start with. The smallest containers are about 28cm x 17cm x 12.5cm, the largest 40cm x 30cm x 24cm (HxLxW)
Second, ask around your friends and family to see if they'd be interested to get product from you. The upside to them is they help prevent plastic waste and can get a range of products cheaper than stores. The downside (we're being honest!), is that it may be a little inconvenient for them and we won't have specific brands they might want (yet!)
If you think you have enough friends and family to give this a go - 5 to 10 people is enough to get started - then you're ready to fill out the application
We'll review it as soon as we can - typically in a week or two - then will call to discuss next steps. Depending on where you are located and level of interest there, we may be able to make deliveries immediately but more likely we’d have to schedule this some weeks out. When we talk we'll be able to give you a much clearer picture on this
+ How much space do I need to be able to do this?
Not a lot, maybe a couple of square metres or so
+ Does it matter where I put it?
Not greatly, but it must be clean and dry. It helps if it's accessible and well illuminated
+ Do I need to have electricity or running water or anything else?
No. None of those are essential. Being in a bright clean area is better, but most clean, dry places are fine
+ How does the process work?
This is pretty easy too!
If you're all approved, we give you access to the Refill Champion purchase page where you can purchase everything you need
The initial outlay is moderate, typically £200-300 but it can be as low as £100. A couple of things to say here. If this is a stretch and you'd rather not make this initial commitment, then talk to us. We can sometimes provide this product discounted or free, and use a plan so you pay back as you go
It’s also worth looking at your absolute downside here…
We sell reusable bottles and other refill accessories on a sale or return basis. If you don't manage to sell them and they're still in good condition, we're happy to accept them back, so there's little risk on these
We can't accept back liquid product for health and safety reasons. But here, the worst outcome is that you have 5-20 litres of inexpensive product that you can't sell
These are household essentials, but if you really can't use it, then this is indeed a problem. But this waste is the totality of your financial risk. And if you can use the product, then you'll save money as you get through it. When you're finished, we’ll come by to pick up the containers and return your deposit. Granted, it might not be your favourite product, but the downside is realistically very limited
+ Is it messy?
Not usually. The push pumps are easy but the taps can take a little getting use to. For the most part, having a handy towel and drip tray is all you need
+ How do I sign up?
If you're interested to sign up, please click here to enter your details. The first step is to enter your postcode so we know where you are. We'll send you an email with a link to an application form for you to complete. This is simple and mainly geared to making sure that we're a good match for each other
+ Why do I have to go through an approval process?
We want to make sure that we're a good fit for you. There are lots of factors at play here - location, accessibility, presence of other refill champions nearby and so on. We also want to make sure you’re enthusiastic and motivated. Running your own refill system can be fun and social, but it does take work and a level of commitment
+ How long will it be before I hear if I've been approved?
We get back to most people in a week or less, but it may take a couple of weeks
+ Do I have to put up any money up front?
No. We ask you to purchase the items you need to get going and put a small returnable deposit on each reusable can (£3-£10 each, depending on size). Product is sold at trade prices so you will make a margin when you sell them at retail prices. We do not levy an application processing fee or anything similar
+ Is there a minimum commitment?
We don't currently have a minimum commitment, although we may change that down the line
+ How much money will I make?
You won't become a millionaire doing this! Most likely, you'll clear about £2000 a year. Some people will get more and some people will get less, and that all depends on how many customers you have and what they buy
Since we don't have any upfront charges or fixed fees, we think it’s very difficult to lose money doing this
At the other extreme, we think the most profit you could make every year is about £10,000. Attaining this will require over 100 customers wanting around five products refilled regularly (e.g. every month). Doable, but not easy
+ What happens if I find it's not worth it?
Simple, you just don't order any more product from us! When you have emptied the last of the containers, we’ll come by to pick them all up so we can return the deposit on them. We’ll also take any accessories sold on a sale or return basis, provided they are in resaleable condition
+ How much plastic waste can I help save?
A lot. Here’s how…
- A 500ml plastic bottle and plastic top weighs about 50g, so 20L of refills can prevent over 2kg of single use plastic
- Five 20L containers represents a potential saving of 10kg of plastic waste
- Selling out all five containers every month means a saving of over 120kg each and every year
But you're not alone! We hope to build a national network of Refill Champions and think there could be 10,000. With such a network, together we could save well over 1,000 tonnes of plastic waste every year
+ What products do you have?
We have hand soap, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent, fabric conditioner, surface spray, kitchen cleaner, shampoo and body wash
We continue to add new products and brands and you can see the entire range once you are approved
+ Where did the products come from?
All the products are made here in the UK by leading providers. Products include national brands, but most are private label products similar to the own-brand versions provided by Sainsbury's, Tesco's and Waitrose
+ Where do you deliver?
Our current active delivery area includes most places south and east of Oxford. But we're growing fast and if you're outside of this zone, we hope to get to you soon. That said, realistically it’s going to be some while before we get to the outer reaches of the country
+ How often do you deliver?
We deliver every four to six weeks and expect frequency to increase in coming months
+ How do I change or cancel an order?
If you want to change an order after it's been placed, please use our contact form. No promises, but we'll do what we can
+ What reusable bottles do you provide?
We provide a range of reusable containers. This includes glass containers to hold laundry liquid and fabric conditioner. We also have purpose-designed stainless steel containers for certain laundry liquids
+ Do people have to buy reusable bottles, or can they use their own?
They can completely use their own. Many people have their own reusable bottles, and if they have some, why not use them!
Of course, people can also repurpose plastic bottles they already have in their house. If they want to do this, that's fine by us. Most households have well over 50 plastic bottles knocking around, so we may as well use them
The main goal for us is avoid the need for as much single-use plastic as possible
+ How can I get in touch with you?
At the moment, email is best, and we promise to be as responsive as we can. Reach us here
